rEGULATION OF iNVESTIGATORY pOWERS ACT (RIPA)

 Surveillance is an important part of any enforcement work and it is essential that those responsible for applying and authorising surveillance are aware of the law, surveillance inspectors guidance and recognised best practices.


This course will ensure that all surveillance operations have been correctly applied for and legally authorised by the Surveillance Authorising Officer to the satisfaction of the Surveillance Inspectors.



Who should attend?

All staff involved in the enforcement process, which requires them to apply for or authorise covert surveillance.

Course Aim

To ensure that all delegates have the necessary knowledge and skills to comply with the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA) and Regulation of Investigatory Powers (Scotland) Act 2000 (RIPSA) when applying and authorising surveillance.

  • Roles & responsibilities of Authorising Officers

  • Correct completion and evaluation of surveillance applications (1 day course only)
  • Forms used in the surveillance process
  • Correct completion of the Review, renew and cancel forms (1 day course only)
  • Collateral intrusion
  • Serious Crime considerations
  • Magistrates approval process 
  • Consequences of a disregard or breach of RIPA
